Opening night, Newcastle

As the hipsters huddled, sucking sublimely on cigarettes, it was almost as though we’d been transposed to NYC. But no, this was still NCL and it was the opening of pop-up gallery and online art store Kitch-en. I looked at the louche group, yep this is an art opening. Slightly intimidated, I sneaked past those super cool things, expecting scowls and disdainful stares, but I think, I think, I saw a smile. Confidence built up, a tiny bit, I entered the space. Bodies filled the gallery. And not just the, those in the know art crowd. Accounts and artist rubbed shoulders, scenesters and suites joked, lawyers and creatives swapped contacts. The amazing mix mash vibe was hustled along by the grooved up grooves, it was almost like the perfect bar, club, café thing, but no, it was a gallery. So to the art work. This was as much a hodgepodge as the crowd. The finely detailed art work of Craww, mixed with the graffiti style work of Sune, juxtaposed with the Parkour photography of Alexander James. The eclectic collection totally summed up everything that Kitch-en Gallery is all about, showing a breadth and variety unseen anywhere else in Newcastle. As I wondered up from the basement I was thinking that it may be time to head home. But I saw a huddle forming. I got to the periphery just in time to see the first skippity moves that occur just before a breakdance move is busted (oh yeah down with the kids). Local street dance heroes, Bad Taste Cru, had been hovering around waiting for the right moment to showcase a few of their trickster skills and wow the crowd. Could this night have got any better? It was then a group of newly made up friends cajoled me to heading to the aftershow soiree at Alvinos. The promise of more Morretti loosened my resolve. Once there I mingled with some of the artists, the Kitch-en boys, and a hundred others. Closing time rolled round way to quick, but by then it really was time to go. So I staggered and smiled into the night.

Deconstruction has begun

The deconstruction of our relaunch exhibition at 18-20 Ridley Place has begun.

Nearly all the work is now down, awaiting collection or to be stored for online sales.

It's always sad taking down an exhibition, especially one of such high calibre, I wish it could remain up permanently for all to see but as the saying goes, you close one door and open another... so now its time to say goodbye Newcastle (for now) and to look forward to London early winter for our next big show!

Although the exhibition itself is going and the doors will be locked, the window display will remain for the foreseeable future, so be sure to keep checking back here for updates on that as we'll be putting together a programme of exciting creative happenings to take place in the window over the coming months.

Preview night of our relaunch event

The preview night on Thursday 4th March was an amazing success, with over 300 people of all shapes, sizes and ages through the doors a good night was had by all.

Thanks to everyone that made it down on the night, we hope you all enjoyed it.

A full review along with all the photos and videos of the night will be posted up here very soon. We just need a couple of days to refresh ourselves after such a busy week.

Kitch-en's Limited Edition Litho Prints

Check out our very special, limited edition A2 litho prints that accompany our relaunch exhibition. They'll be on sale for just £3 on the night and are all numbered and limited to 100.

For every exhibition we hold we will be producing a limited edition litho print/poster that will act as an affordable, collectable memory of the night. A bit like when you get a poster from a music gig etc. They will be strictly limited to 100 copies so don't miss out on kickstarting your collection, make sure you get down early to the Relaunch Event on Thursday 4th March, 6pm - 8.30pm, with only 100 available, at £3 they're an absolute bargain and when they're gone they're gone. 

Barry Self - A Retrospective

With help from Sandy at Ghetto Method, we've put together a fantastic collection of photos by Barry Self.

Barry is a North East photographer who relentlessly documented the hip hop & breakdancing scene here in Newcastle and beyond throughout his life. He sadly passed away at the New Year and now Kitch-en Gallery has the privilege of presenting his very fine collection of photos, many of them never seen before. RIP Barry, known by many, forgotten by none!

This video slideshow will be projected into our window display on alternate nights from 5 - 9pm over the next week or so so be sure to go and take a look. We'll also be featuring a number of Barry's photos in our relaunch exhibition so don't miss that either.

Kitch-en Gallery re-launch

What: The re-launch of Kitch-en Gallery. Our brand new website and new line-up of artists.

Yes you heard right, Kitch-en is back - just like the Terminator said he would be.
We may have been away for a little bit but rest assured we've not been lazing about on some private beach with palm trees and gorgeous sunshine (we wish). Nope we've been attending to a few family matters - you know those things that cry and be sick all the time.

During our 'time off' we had a chance to search high and low across the country, and the world, for a brand new line-up of artists. We've hand picked a fine selection of illustrators, graffiti artists, graphic designer, photographers, doodlers and vinyl toy makers and now its very nearly time to take off the virtual dust sheets and reveal all.

On Thursday 4th March 2010 at 6pm inside a disused shop unit in Newcastle (and in the virtual world of www dots all around the world) Kitch-en Gallery will officially re-launch. A new website, new artists (and some of our old motley crew of course) and lots of entertainment to see through the night.

On the night there will be a specially curated exhibition of Limited Edition Prints, Originals and Vinyl Toys from the likes of Ben the Illustrator, Phlegm, Craww, Alexander James, Joel Millerchip, Matt JOnes aka Lunartik, Mr Arteest, Jessie Douglas, Gonduras Jitomirsky, Myne, Jam Factory, European Animal and maybe a few more but they're top secret for now.

We'll also have some live graffiti (proper freestyle spraypainty stuff) by the ever so marvellous Ghetto Method Collective. Mudfoot Blaps will be on the ones and twos bringing you funky sounding delights for your ears and we've heard a whisper that legendary North East breakdancers, Bad Taste Cru will be making an appearance. Who knows they might even bust a move or two...
